12th citation: The Billfish have certainly made a big showing. Almost every boat has come back with between one and six flags. For those of you that don't know the flags are representation of the Billfish that were caught. A blue flag with a white fish on it means it was a White Marlin. The Sailfish and Blue Marlin flags look very similar with a blue fish on a white background, but you can tell the difference by the way the sail of the fish is shaped. If the flags are right side up, then the fish are being brought back to the dock, but if the flags are upside down that means that the fish were released. (Sometimes the charter forgets and shows the flags right side up on accident in the pictures. So if you see the flag is right side up in the picture, but you don't see the billfish itself, it may have been an honest mistake). Most of the time Billfish are released. However, if for some reason the fish dies or it is a Swordfish, they will bring the fish back to the docks. Another fun fact about Billfish flags is that the boats are only allowed to keep the flags displayed on the boats until noon the next day. If the flags are left up after noon the following day, then it is considered false advertising. It makes it look like the flags were caught that day. So rest assured if you see flags flying here, they were caught THAT DAY!! 757-491-8000 1-800-725-0509 |
